Classic Malham!

Just 6 miles from the King William the Fourth Guest House is the village of Malham, a honeypot for visitors to Yorkshire. There is a lovely walk which takes a couple of hours and takes in the three main features of the local landscape – the Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss. This is a 4.5mile circular  Walk.

Malham Cove is a huge natural limestone cliff which was once a spectacular prehistoric waterfall.

At the top of the cove is a fine limestone pavement – which provides a wonderful viewpoint over Malham and Malhamdale.

The cove is popular with rock climbers, and also peregrine falcons which have returned in recent years to nest on ledges on the otherwise sheer cliff face.

Gordale Scar is a huge gorge created during the Ice Age when melt water created a cavern, the roof of which eventually collapsed.

The waterfall that flows down the scar is on a footpath to Malham Tarn. It can readily be climbed under normal conditions but becomes very difficult, if not impossible, after heavy rain.

Janet’s Foss is a very pretty waterfall and pool set in ancient woodland a short distance from Malham Village.

Janet’s Foss has been used as a natural sheep dip for local farmers, a location for family swims and celebrations and may even be the home of Jennet the Queen of the Fairies in a cave behind the falls or another small cave to the right
